Juuzou Suzuya is one of the most interesting characters from the anime series Tokyo Ghoul; he's the Special Class Investigator that we all love. But since the first season (Tokyo Ghoul) and the second season (Tokyo Ghoul √A), Juuzou Suzuya changed a lot.

𖡨 JUUZOU'S PAST 𖡨
Unfortunately this character had a very dark past. Rei (that's the name he went by during his past) became the personal human of a rich Ghoul lady named Big Madam. She was making him fight bare hands against other humans, so he could gain "good boy" points. Big Madam tortured him on a daily basis and this ruined Rei from a psychological point of view. But one day the place where all these illegal fights had place got attacked by CCG (Commission of Counter Ghoul) and Rei was finally liberated. He lately became the partner of Yukinori Shinohara. In the third season (Tokyo Ghoul: Re), during a secret mission that had killing the dangerous Ghoul Nutcracker as goal, Juuzou encounters Big Madam again. During his time with Big Madam, Suzuya could handle hooks going through the back of his body. As a result of Big Madam's treatment, Juuzou no longer felt fear, pain, nor did he have any morals. Yukinori Shinohara, his mentor, described him as a problem child. Despite his childish and playful demeanor (Juuzou was 19 yo in the first season) he was also extremely violent and highly disturbed. He usually described his killing methods to be clean, without needless movements, which is a skill he seemed to take pride in. He showed no hesitation to kill someone. Because of his lack of emotional understanding, he was willing to confront any opponent head-on, no matter how dangerous they were. This had proven to be disastrous when he decided to take on the Owl alone when cooperation was necessary. Originally, he showed no signs of empathy whatsoever and did not understand the emotions of others. However, when he realized how important Shinohara was to him, he let out a cry of anguish. This demonstrated Juuzou's capability to love and care for individuals close to him. After Shinohara was comatose, Suzuya expresses guilt and remorse for not being able to protect him, deeply bowing and apologizing to his wife. In Tokyo Ghoul: Re is shown that Juuzou goes to the hospital to spend time with Shinohara and often brings him flowers. Even though Big Madam destroyed him, he still has a lot of humanity left.

𖡨 HIS APPEARANCE - BEFORE 𖡨
Juuzou is a young-looking man with an androgynous appearance, with pale skin and pure shoulder-length white hair. In his hair he wears red hairpins, which form the Roman numeral XIII (13), keeping back his bangs. He has dark red eyes with bags under them. He self-stitches his own body, explaining it to be a form of body modification. A miniature set of red threads that appeared to be two x's are stitched on below his right eye. One below his bottom lip and a line of several stitching threads from his upper neck downward, and several more around his right arm and hand. His attire consisted of a white suit with sleeves rolled up to the elbows, left halfway buttoned and polka-dotted red suspenders that supported his black pants and a pair of red slippers. He frequently wore a black suit above all this, with rolled up sleeves.

𖡨 HIS APPEARANCE - AFTER 𖡨
In Tokyo Ghoul: Re Juuzou's appearance changes drastically. His hair is now dyed black and reaches only chin-length. And, his stitches are in a different pattern. His attire consists of a black suit with black dress pant and red suspenders with yellow triangle pattern. He has a prosthetic leg as a replacement for his leg that was maimed in the Owl Suppression Operation years ago. Later on in the third season, Juuzou's hair have passed shoulder-length again which highlights his resemblance to the "old Juuzou" a bit more. He either keeps it tied in a bun above his head or in a ponytail, or without, as was shown in the promotion ceremony. He has also changed the stitch markings below his right eye, returning it to the original two x's. He has removed all stitch markings from below his right lip. He also changed the Roman numeral in his hairs, now making it the Roman numeral XX (20), the "Judgement" tarot.

𖡨 JUUZOU'S WEAPON - BEFORE 𖡨
Scorpion 1/56
It's a bikaku quinque that takes the form of a throwing Knife. It is a set of 56 blades that Juuzou keeps hidden in his shirt that can be used both as melee and throwing weapons. Juuzou is very skilled at throwing them (in the third season he's gonna teach Tooru Mutsuki too) with perfect aim and uses two or more at a time during an encounter with an opponent, often throwing several in the air to catch before striking. We can see him use these knives during a fight with the Ghoul twins Kurona and Nashiro. After getting his stomach cut open, Juuzou could still fight and beat them without any difficulties.
x
13's (Juuzou's) Jason
It's a rinkaku quinque that takes the form of a square and jagged scythe and has an L-shaped blade with a sharp tip. It was created from Yamori's kakuhou and it's final form was designed by Kouitsu Chigyou of the CCG Laboratory Division. In addition of being able to produce a kagune from its blade, the quinque is of very high quality, noted to possess an instantaneous Rc value of 5000, classifying it in the monster class. We can see Juuzou use this quinque during the Owl Suppression Operation and, again, during his fight with the Ghoul twins Kurona and Nashiro.

𖡨 JUUZOU'S WEAPON - AFTER 𖡨
Scorpion 1/56
In Tokyo Ghoul: Re he'll still use his knives, with the slightest difference that he's gonna hide them inside his prosthetic leg
x
13's (Juuzou's) Jason
It was destroyed during Suzuya's confrontation with Kurona Yasuhisa. Later, it was repaired and used to defend one of the branch offices from the Clowns.

𖡨 PROTHESIS 𖡨
Since losing his right leg below the knee in the battle against the Owl, Suzuya has been fitted with an advanced prosthetic leg. He can detach his prosthetic leg and attack non-expecting ghouls with the blades hidden inside.
𖡨 PERSONAL THOUGHTS 𖡨
I personally don't like how Juuzou changed, I love the character design he kept for the first and the second season. I think a clothes transformation was going to be enough. I don't like seeing him with black hair but maybe the decision of making him with dyed hair was chosen to demonstrate that now he's a new Juuzou, and not Rei anymore. That the Juuzou that we're gonna see from now on isn't the weak Juuzou Big Madam has tortured. I also don't like how some stitches were deleted, or changed place, since they're one of his most important characteristics. The fact that he lost a leg wasn't "hard to accept" (cried for 3 and a half hours) since it was predictable that he was going to receive some damage from the Owl fight (especially after fighting alone, without teaming up). But I still love this character. I cosplayed Juuzou at the Milan Cartoomics 2018 and I was super happy when people actually asked me to take pictures with them. The quinque that I chose to remake was the 13's (Juuzou's) Jason.
